    Blessings

I had the blessing of having a birthday recently and another birthday is always, as Martha Stewart would say, “a good thing.” I wouldn’t want to miss a thing that is going on with family and friends.  It was as if after that date on the calendar passed the whirlwind of my days began.  I was scooping off the driveway one day from a light snowfall and went right into filling up the small trailer with branches from the winter winds.  There was no chance to rake off the flower gardens from the huge Maple and Oak trees as the hosta and other perennials were popping up through the soggy, wet blankets of their winter protection.  Several hours would pass quickly as I found a plant for my foot to sit next to while seeking the next plant’s proximity to lift and release some of the matted material around it.  One stretch of my short legs at a time, looking for buried treasure.  Great workouts were at hand with a lot of my bottom sticking up in the air.  After several days I could see I was making some headway and my body was holding out without aches and pains.  Let’s hear it for exercising in our gardens.

I did pace myself with the yard work, realizing that a spring that started in early March means a long season of manual labor.  In times past I had decided growing good looking flower beds was so much easier than a manicured lawn.  As I took a break from grubbing in the dirt with a cup of coffee on the patio I felt a glimmer of second guessing myself if I could continue managing all the flower beds on our acre of urban yard.  It would take a lot of coffee breaks and maybe I should consider putting out a few more of my green plastic patio chairs in strategic areas of the yard.

The enjoyment that the Maple tree gives Megan is amazing. Within the center pod, the world is her imaginative oyster.

We were so excited when granddaughter Megan was coming for the weekend.  As the grandkids are getting older, it is hard to fit in Stauffer Avenue here in St. James.  Megan helped with the garden as her strong young legs ran back and forth with errands.  Her crowning glory was when she could put out some garden art to ring in the season.   She made it all look so easy.  Megan’s enthusiasm rubbed off on me and I needed to remind myself that I do have it in me to continue with my passion of gardening, and thus allowing for a full season of enjoyment.  I can do this!

Megan and I took a break and scrubbed our finger nails clean so she could work on her gifts for her mom and dad.  She had taken several selfies recently and came with the photos printed out along with frames that would be decorated and contain the photos for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts.  It may have been a spur of the moment project for me, but Megan and I found paints and embellishments within my stashes to pull it all together and pull it off.  They soon became important loot in her suitcase for the time when she would be going home.

Grandpa Dennis had been saving bits and pieces of dried lumber and dried tree branches so we could have a wiener roast for Saturday night’s supper.  In times past we had used sticks to do the wieners and marshmallows.  Last year at the Odin Craft Mill I purchased two new items for the roasting.  Someone had taken the head off of golf clubs and had welded two prongs on to be the perfect roasting stick.  Not too many people have wiener roasting sticks complete with cushioned hand grips.  Who knew that there are caramel flavored marshmallows!

Megan is twelve and we do not have any prearranged plans when we know she is coming.  She is growing up so quickly and her likes and interests are also privy to change in a matter of several months.  We just let the time define itself.  Before Dennis and I knew it, out came the age old dollhouse along with the plastic ice cream pails of animals that she and Nicholas have been collecting over the last 11 years.  Megan did gardening, reading from her school library book, mixing up a batch of sugar cookies from scratch, but in the small quiet times the dollhouse was dubbed a veterinary clinic.  It warms our hearts that there is still the love of pretend play in our soon-to-be teenager.  Priceless.

Megan has had Grandpa Dennis right where she wanted him for a long, long time.

Megan has totally stolen Grandpa Dennis’ heart from the time she was just a wee bit.  He tried to talk her into staying longer, knowing that the school year is not yet over.  Megan does have Grandpa Dennis’ promise that he will come and get her anytime she wants to come for a stay. In the meantime, he recited limericks to Megan on the trip from St. James to Eden Prairie.

In time, we are anticipating that Nicolas’ schedule will lighten up and come for an extended visit.  Last summer season, Nicholas had a foot injury and had to sit out of his summer activities.  This spring and summer he is going full bore.

Oh yes, blessings are abound here on Stauffer Avenue, and I know there are so many more to come.  As long as Dennis and I keep moving to take care of each other while keeping our home and our acre in tact, we have it made.

In life, give and have no memory of it, or take and remember it always.

Whew! We are home from the metro area after delivering Megan home safe and sound. What a great several days. This early afternoon when we needed to hit the highway, she was dilly dallying around in the far east part of the lawn with Snuggles. Megan with her favorite dried stick as if she were Moses wandering the wilderness with Snuggles right at her heels. I think she would have stayed for many more days . . . hopefully there will be many more such visits.

    Great Days!

Great days for the weekend and they are flying by too fast.  Megan came Friday after school to enjoy the weekend with us. What is a weekend without sleeping in after a late night of the Disney channel.

The dollhouse comes out at each visit. This week, Megan has been playing with the dollhouse as a veterinarian clinic. I marvel at how long her legs are. ten years ago she was as tall as the dollhouse itself.

Sugar cookies that are rolled out are just the best. Megan’s batch made three dozen cookies, ready to be frosted. I wonder how many batches of cookies have been rolled out with Megan’s Great Grandmother Esther Schafer’s glass rolling pin? I am not sure if glass rolling pins are still able to be purchased.

The second shift is coming this afternoon. Granddaughter Megan will be coming after school today. Oh how I will enjoy having help with some of the garden art. As schedules fill up for adults, children are no longer immune. Having Megan here until Sunday afternoon will be quite the treat.

It took a bit, but Grandpa Dennis found the hot dog pokers for a wiener roast Saturday night. Having two of them that were at one time golf clubs complete with padded handles will make roasting of marshmallows and wieners so much easier.

All we need to do is dust off the jar of bubble juice for bubbles of various sizes to be enjoyed. Dennis and I are excited.

I did hear someone say “What’s for supper?” After being outside for most of the afternoon, I think it will be Jimmy Dean Sausage, eggs and toast. Thankfully, we enjoy the breakfast menu anytime.

I do have a project awaiting in the sewing studio. The quilt that I told Lorraine I would finish for her has been done on the long arm at the Old Alley Quilt Shop and now will have the binding put on and then hemmed in my shop. When I visited her this forenoon, showing her the quilted project, I needed her advice as to if it should be hand hemmed or machined hemmed. Considering it will be put to use at her granddaughter’s home, the machine hemming seems to be the best route. I don’t have a deadline, but considering the Pancreatic cancer won’t be taking a holiday from Lorraine, I will tackle it sooner than later.

I will be taking breaks and enjoying coffee with Dennis on the patio during these long awaited spring days.

Life on Stauffer with Dennis is good.

70 degrees and it felt as if our wonderful summer is right around the corner. As I walk the gardens, it amazes me the various heights of the Hosta plants. Some are barely peeking out and others are over a foot in diameter.

Dennis attended his Korean Veterans luncheon today and I had the little red pickup going here and there for my errand list. I dropped Dennis off at eleven and was ready to pick him up at one. I can still make tracts when the need arises.

I don’t believe we have had a single garden hose attachment that has lasted through one season. Generally, the small clip that holds the water stream to run continuously is not of the same quality as the rest of the tool. Today at Lowe’s I looked and checked the tags as to which would be best. I did take two different models for our two outside sources of water. Time will tell.

I hit Sam’s Club, Drummer’s Nursery and Lowe’s. I admit, I did catch a bit of a cat nap while Dennis drove this ole “Miss Daisy” home. I can’t shop like I used to, but if one would have looked in the back of the pickup . . . it was fairly full. It is not how many hours you shop, it’s how quickly you can shop when you are organized.

What a beautiful day. Crisp in the morning, warming up nicely for the rest of the day. The lilacs are just coming into their own with their fragrance wafting as the breezes blow.

Dennis waited through a long cool spring to be able to sit out on the patio and watch the clouds go by. An afternoon such of this makes one believe that life is good even if it can be a challenge once in awhile to be a good steward of our home.

I can tell you that after this afternoon when I look out of the house window towards the porch, the windows are clean to the point I can see Dennis enjoying his rocking chair. Winter grime is gone. Dennis did remind me that Spic ‘n Span was not warranted as it is a porch that gets a lot of use. I countered that at least I know that we are starting out fresh and from now on it will be new dirt, not the winter’s dirt.

The sun came out and we sat on the patio. The sun felt great on my back. It is not warm enough for the perennials to really pop up. The lilacs are blooming and it smells great on the patio. Life on Stauffer is very, very nice.

Friday night and all is well on Stauffer.

All of Dennis’ cats made curfew. The Lincoln is back in its stall and Butter Ball and Snuggles are already in their box up in the rafters above the car. They sure did miss that for several nights. We could not have ask for a better ending for this week.

I am counting on a warmer and sunnier weekend than what we have experienced in the previous days. No doubt, when I look out the window tomorrow, there will be lawnmowers lined up just as in an implement showroom. I must say, the day of yard work will be warranted . . . after all, it’s good to stay active.

How bad can a gloomy day be when the first rhubarb of the season was plucked for a crumble dessert. It turned out great, and was the perfect oven companion with a roast. I must admit the warmth of the furnace on these cool days has been pretty sweet.
