    Wind

The wind from the southeast has the ability to lift the cover of our mail slot on the west side of the house.  Before I realized what it was, I did have some weird thoughts.

Dennis headed downtown to the laundry this morning with a load of carpet rag rugs and one load of kitty basket blankets.  I sure appreciated getting that laundry basket empty.

While I had the quiet of the house to myself, I needed to find the answer as to why we had gotten bumped off of HULU.  There are several programs on it that both Dennis and I enjoy.  I do not like this type of technical quagmire.  By nine forty, all was well.  Where is that Channel 12 with Chuck Pessac?  Life seemed so much easier then.

glider-rockerWith my Murphy wood wipes I tackled my parent’s glider rocking chair.  For seventy five years I have dusted all the spindles, nooks and crannies.  It doesn’t get easier.  I do appreciate being the caregiver of this jewel.  Without a doubt, furniture is not built like this anymore.  Years ago I did have my carpenter reinforce the veneer seat.  Special family memories can be evoked with each wipe of the Murphy wood cloths.

While I had the Murphy wood wipes out I also tackled our Oak refractory table.  I can squat down far enough to get the job done.  The butt cheeks will be bucking for a while.  I think it’s important to feel your body’s parts to truly appreciate the fact that they still work.

Last week I bought a Hamburger Helper box of goodies, the stroganoff flavor.  With browned ground beef, I have it prepared and plan on popping it into the oven for a full through heating, rather than relying on the stove top.  We are oven meal people.

The wind remains whipping through the yards with a very dark gray cloud cover.

With that I take my leave.♥

    Sunny Afternoon

The sun has made an appearance . . . at least off and on.  It seems like we will have some nice temps through next week.

My day started out absolutely great.  Thank goodness for phones.

Just when I thought Dennis had an empty job jar, it was not meant to be.  A bottle of Murphy’s wood soap and whatever is wood in the patio porch is getting cleaned from top to bottom.  Yes, that warrants a nap in between.  Naps are good.  My dad believed in them.

The lights were on in the studio over the noon hour.  A bit of fabric cutting and a bit of stitching, followed by steam pressing.  That was all she wrote for the day in the studio.

I wanted to go uptown to the grocer’s.  I noticed last week that their flyer had boxes of steamer frozen veggies on sale.  I made sure that the freezer unit of our refrigerator was organized.  We had picked up an 8lb. bag of chicken tenderloins in Sam’s Club last week.  This was the perfect day to take freezer bags and bag up three tenderloins in each.  The small bags tucked in easily around the ice cream and the heavy bag was a drag to get out and take out a few each time.  With the freezer tidied, I knew how much of the frozen vegies I could buy.  It’s nice to have a variety over and above from canned goods.  I was also hungry for pickled beets.  Dennis was hungry for the chunky Campbell’s bean and ham soup.  Mission completion.  My all time favorite apple is the McIntosh.  I have three bags of 5lb. each in the refrigerator in the basement.  An apple a day will keep the doctor away . . . I hope, I hope.

We no longer have heavy meals for supper, but I do like to put out a variety of supper meals.  Between the freezer and the pantry, the bases are covered.  I did leave three chicken tenderloins out for supper.  Instant mashed potatoes and a can of green beans will round things out.  I have never cared for frozen green beans.  I think they are tough.

What I had on my mind has seemed to dribble out into a blog post.  What I find to be thankful for is that my mental energy and my physical energy is quite well paired.

With that I take my leave.  ♥

    Time to Build

With all my scrappiness, it is time to begin building a quilt top.

There are four different designs blocks to work with.  Blocks 1,2,3 needed sixteen each.  Block four is the end cap for the56-Blocks-Small eight rows and thus is a half block to ensure staggering, to the right on row one and to the left on row two, etc.

I have no name for this soon to be quilt.  I saw it on one of the YouTube channels I have subscribed to.  When I reached out to her, she was gracious to send me information in an email.

This has been a fun project.  When I come down into the studio and glance over at the array of blocks, it makes me smile.  All of the different sizes in each block with all the different prints is a testament of my passion for challenges.  It couldn’t be a testament if there were no tests and this project did test my concentration.

More work is yet to come as each of the 56 bocks need to be trimmed for a consistent measurement of 8.25″.  That task will be for another day.

Dennis has been doing his duty at raking up leaves and burning a small bit before raking up more.  Oak and Maple trees in the yard mean lots and lots of leaves that have fluttered and many more to come.

I am kitchen bound after posting this to my blog.  I have one fairly large pork steak to prepare for supper.  By the time I am done seasoning it to build a great flavor and putting it into my blue speckled roaster to pop into the oven, Dennis won’t know if it is pork or beef.

With that I take my leave.  ♥

    Friday the Third

KNUJ tells me it is 49 degrees outside.  The active Boxelder bugs affirmed that.  I have nabbed three of them here in the studio.  Ish!

Earlier this week Dennis and I recovered from having water come up from the floor drain twice.  Dennis was helping with the mopping of the floor with heavily added Clorox water.  It was my time to sit it out for a few moments, I commented that weaker those than us would have a good reason to think of moving to apartment living.  As soon as the words came out of my mouth, I knew this event would not deter us from taking care of our forever home. Of course it is daunting and inconvenient.  Lots of things in life are.

I knew when I had headed for bed last night, I needed the rest.  Since my stroke, when nine o’clock comes in the evening, I begin getting wanky weary.  Dennis could set his watch by me heading for my bed.  Couple that with activity such as yesterday, rest is mandatory.  And . . . with one bathroom visit at 3 a.m., my time to put the feet on the floor the next morning is not before seven to seven thirty.  Rest is the easiest way to keep me on track.  I wish I could nap during the day as my dad could and Dennis can.  When I do check my eyelids for cracks it is the real deal.

This morning when the studio lights were turned on . . . I was in my element just as much as Dennis is in his garages and his patio porch.

I had taken a break from stitching to put out this blog posting.  I will go back to pressing what I had stitched until we have the agreed upon supper . . . soup and a half sandwich.

With that I will take my leave.  ♥

    Hello Saturday

This is a day that had not one single thing on the agenda, the last Saturday of October.

I am not going to miss with messing with the clock by turning it back in the fall and ahead in the spring.  If  only our legislative secessions could get something else done during their spring fling that could again benefit everyone.

Dennis has been putzing in and around the garages.  He manages to stay busy.

I have had the day in the studio.  The radio is on in the background to catch any snippet of area news and weather.  I follow a quilter on YouTube that lives in Indiana.  She does longarm quilting for others and each week she showcases the week’s worth that is ready to go back to the owners for final binding.  Seeing all the patterns, sizes and color schemes is an inspiration for me.

Tammy Earnest did share clips from a family picnic.  What struck me and other viewers is that the picnic tables had quilts on them as tablecloths.  She followed up with comments to her video yesterday.  Quilts are to be used.  Someone had mentioned to her, “My mother quilted but we never got to use them.”  For myself, I agree.  Use them, abuse them so the quilts keep on sending the messages while they were being made . . . individual love to each owner.  Cottons today are durable and washable and . . . mendable if something need it.

I no longer intend or plan on cranking out multiple quilts each year, but having one being built under the needle is satisfying.  The three quilts of 2023 were not completed to stay here on Stauffer Avenue, they were intended for the specific request.  The scrappy one I am now working on is a fun one.

We are going to have some Gorton fish filets, instant potatoes and green beans for supper.

With that I take my leave  ♥

    Harvest

The grain elevator is open on this a Sunday.  Every color of tractor possible is hauling in wagons of shell corn.  Not every farm works with their own semis.

Dennis manned the weed whip and the plants right east along the foundation have been taken out.  I clipped off the spent lily stalks in the area going into the house.  With my handy pail, both sites were raked and added to the burn ring east of the garage.  Small steps toward what each day is leading to.

When I went outside this afternoon, I went via the front door.  The bugs don’t get direct sun there and I could escape.  Ish!  I have never found what purpose they serve.  Taking my pail of greenery to the burning ring, I noticed a huge wasp’s nest on the south gable of the potting shed.  Ish!

When I was outside, neighbor Jan and I visited over the picket fence.  She asked how things were going.  I made mention that the bucket list of the blue barn acre was empty for the year.  She remembered all the Kudzu vines hanging from the trees.  Dennis nipped all of them where they came out of the ground so that what went up in the trees has no food source . . . except one.  I just got a text from Jan explaining that her new battery chainsaw made short work of that last vine.  My, oh my!  I did indeed thank her.

Some time was spent in the studio today, pairing up fabric prints to make 16 of the “Block 2” design.  With that cutting and pairing, the sewing of those blocks will go well.

It is a tomato soup supper this evening.  Crackers, bread, butter and jam will round it out.  Vanilla ice cream could be the finish.  Dennis did comment that tomorrow might be grocery shopping.  With our summer and early fall having been busy getting our total homestead whipped into shape before cold weather, our pantry in the basement has never been so empty.

We didn’t have a garden to harvest, but I know some great canned goods to have on hand.

With that I take my leave.  ♥

    Cloudy

This is a cloudy hump day.  When I went for a walk this afternoon, it felt like it could rain.

I am having the week off as far as appointments go.  Dennis, not so much.  Monday was his yearly visit with our family doctor.  Today was his scheduled injection for macular.  Tomorrow he will have his INR, blood clotting, check.  Friday he meets with his primary Veteran’s doctor.  It’s all about remaining on the active list for benefits.  All the appointments are only a stone’s throw from our home.

Stitching went well in the studio.  It didn’t take long for me to realize I needed a different weight of cotton thread in the bobbin as well as in the needle.  My fabric is a lightweight cotton, so should be the sewing thread.  What I had cut and laid out yesterday was stitched today.  I would be very content if the days going forward follow that routine.  Not overdoing any aspect of the project.

I have chicken tenderloins thawed for supper.  My favorite shake of coating is in a zipper Glad bag.  I use Bisquick, any pancake flour would work.  Cinnamon, Turmeric, some seasoned salt and ground pepper coats the chicken and it doesn’t take long to fix the chicken in the fry pan with the screen to prevent spattering.  It’s surprising how low the heat under the pan can be.  Dennis has a choice of cream style corn or green beans to go along with the instant potatoes.  It has been quite a while since a hot, three-course meal has been served here on Stauffer Avenue.

The afternoon is still young and the cherry red chair is beckoning for several chapters to be read.  I may need my light on as the clouds have left the bedroom porch dark.  With that I take my leave. ♥

    As Right as Rain

The KEYC news last night was as right as rain for this morning.  It started raining about nine this morning.

There may well be an Indian Summer yet to come.  If not, our job jar is empty.  We had not procrastinated, so let the days role.

When I thought about this evening’s supper, there were three lonely hamburger patties in the freezer. There was one oven meal size of pasta left in a cello bag being held shut via a snap clothespin.  Let’s just do it up.  Browning the hamburger with a bit of seasoning salt, it was added to the hot pasta.  While the pasta was still hot, I folded in a generous tablespoon of Better than Bullion, oven roasted garlic flavor.

The plan is to have a goodly amount leftover for tomorrow night’s supper.

I may not have a lot of spunk after getting home from Mankato tomorrow.  I am scheduled for check-in at the Mankato Heart Center at 8:30 on Friday the thirteenth, for a Echo-Transesophageal procedure: swallowing a guided camera to take a look at my heart.  I wouldn’t miss this date for all the money in the world.  Dennis will be as close to me as they allow.  I will have a follow-up with my cardiologist on October 31st.

The phone calls for this prep has not left one item for chance or debate.  What a great procedure to have done this fall.

This rain is due to carry over into the weekend.  Our sump pump has not run once this spring and summer.  Dennis was ready as he made sure the down-spouts are in place.

Take care one and all going into the fall-feeling weekend.

    White Frost

It did get serious last night for it to have put white frost on the roof tops.

Small-VinesThis forenoon Dennis and I returned to the blue barn acre.  It was our intent to start some small fires around the area of the Kudzu laden tree of all the debris we had raked together yesterday.  I had quite a few empty paper towel rolls that Dennis stuffed with rags that were soaked in gas.   As the fires took air, I continued raking and cutting off sucker vines of the Kudzu.  All of these small vines will no longer get any nourishment from their roots.

A beast of a VineNeither one of us felt the cool air as we continued feeding the fires.  There was no wind to speak of.  Dennis took me home at noon and he went back to make sure the three piles would eventually be piles of ashes.  I do believe that we will need a chainsaw visit to cut off the large vine that has had way too much time to work its while.   My six inch rake and the Harbor Freight lopper are no match to deal with that beast.

The two of us are settling in for the afternoon.  I did take out out a bag of vegetable beef soup for supper.

    Thirty What?

It was 37 degrees this morning.  That ought to get everyone’s attention.  Us, not so much.

We went on with our usual morning routines.

When I heard Dennis come into the house at eleven, I thought it would be for more coffee.  By the time he had found his way to my bedroom porch where I had been stitching, I looked up.  I looked up and Dennis was in his shoes and shirt and jacket, but no pants.  Hmm.  I think I knew the rest of the story.  Dennis had been over at the blue barn acre and it was either sandburs or burdock that his pants were covered in and he had left them in the patio porch.

Each day he tells me that if nothing more gets done at the acre, he will be happy.  Curry . . . put your money where your mouth is.  Too funny.  He knows doggone-well, the pants can get cleaned up, but not in the house and not by me.

It has been cool enough that I decided to put an oven dish together.  Right now, my arms are taking a break.  My blue speckled round roaster is filled to level with goodies.  There are also two glass freezer dishes sitting to the side to be filled, sealed, and put into the freezer for another time.  The ingredients start with medium sized egg noodles cooking to tender.  Two cans of drained white chicken meat loosened with a fork to shredded status in my strainer and then into the roaster.  One can of cream of chicken soup over the chicken and mixed well.  One can of drained white corn and one can of drained green beans that have been chopped and into the roaster both items go.  The pasta is cooked and while it is still hot, two generous tablespoons of Better Than Bullion roasted chicken flavor stirred in.  Folding all the ingredients is a pull on the arms.  All that is left is a portion of a jar of Alfredo sauce poured over.  I always save a bit of the Alfredo, so I can pour some heavy cream into the jar and shake, shake.  More folding over and over and over with my wooden spoon.

What will ensue is a hearty oven meal heated at 325 degrees for one hour, served about five thirty.  Two frozen dishes of the same into the freezer for another time.

When I do some dishes, why not make it worth while.  I do spray my roaster and my two freezer dishes with Pam.  The freezer dishes do have snap on lids, but I always stretch over some cling free wrap before the covers go on which will easily be removed before they go into the oven after they have been thawed.  Some foil over the top saves the top from drying out as the oven makes magic.

Hmm.  That has been my adventure for the afternoon . . . what has yours been?
